An Understanding

I've always thought I had an understanding with people, but maybe I need to go ahead and put this out in the open.

I will always listen to you. I will be there to help you with your problems. But what is said between us if for you and you alone.

An example that doesn't really pertain to anybody, but is just a general example I think we can all understand:

If you're having trouble with your signifigant other, I will listen. You can tell me all the horrible things he/she is doing, and unless someone is in danger, I will not tell them you told me, because that's what you asked. I won't tell anybody you don't want knowing these things. That's fine. No problem. But if you ask my opinion as to whether or not you two should stay together, after I'm done asking you what you think, if you really want to hear it, I will give it to you, even if it's something you might not want to hear. And I don't expect to find your signifigant other throwing this in my face a few days later.

I'm not going to convince you to do anything. That's not why I'm here. I usually won't come out and tell you what I think, anyway, but just keep asking questions that make you discover what you think. Chances are, you've already made a decision, and all I've got to do is help you sort through the clustered thoughts to find it.

If you ask my opinion, though, I will give it. But my opinion doesn't matter, because it's not my life. I'm trying to help you, not steer your life for you. And I will not take responsibility for your life. So don't try to put it on me. That's not what friends do.

Don't ask me to keep secrets you can't. Don't ask me to help if you're not willing to help yourself. And don't ask my opinion if you don't want to hear it.

It's that simple. . .

Yesterday was a good day. This just seemed more important to say. If I have more time, maybe I'll go back to it. . .
