Inevitable

If you would just reach out your hand
my heart would be there for your grasp
And though you might not keep it long
I will not miss it while this lasts
The words "I love you" leave my lips
but only scatter
for they don't matter
And then you try
to catch another's eye
and wonder why I cry

Would I still long for which I ask
if love were never such a task?
Would it still hold such crushing awe
if I were immersed in its maw?
The words "I love you" leave my lips
and yet, once again
find only cold wind
But as the rain
will not refuse to drop
I know I'll never stop. . .
